What is Invokana?

Invokana, also referred to as canagliflozin, is a relatively new drug designed for the treatment of Type-2 diabetes.  Combined with proper diet and exercise the medication is intended to lower patient blood sugar.  Invokana is classified as an SGLT2 (sodium-glucose cotransporter-2) inhibitors.  Invokana lowers blood sugar by blocking the absorption of glucose in the kidneys, increasing the excretion of it through the urinary tract.  When paired with a healthy lifestyle Invokana has been shown to decrease blood sugar levels in patented with Type-2 diabetes.

Tragically, despite its hope and potential, Invokana has been linked to a series of serious, adverse side effects.

Invokana Side Effects

In 2016 the FDA updated the labeling of Invokana to further highlight the seriousness of side effects linked to the drug.  Unfortunately this action comes all too late for patients who had already been prescribed Invokana.  Patients who have been prescribed Invokana have suffered negative side effects such as:

  • Dehydration
  • Orthostatic hypotension (dizziness when standing)
  • Ketoacidosis (excess acid in the blood)
  • Kidney damage/kidney failure
  • UTI (urinary tract infection)
  • Confusion
  • Yeast infections in both men and women
  • Heart attack
  • Vomiting
  • Allergic reactions
  • Swollen hands and/or feet
  • Abdominal pain and more

The side effects from Invokana can become so severe that they require hospitalization, lead to coma, or can even cause death.  Invokana isn’t the only SGLT2 inhibitor linked to adverse side effects: Invokamet, Forxiga, Xigduo XR, Jardiance, and Glyxambi have all been linked to excess acid in the bloodstream (ketoacidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and ketosis).  The disastrous consequences of these side effects have led to numerous lawsuits being filed against the drug manufacturer.  If you have suffered any of these side effects or others because of Invokana, there is legal help available.
